Who We Are

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Tri-Cities has been transforming the lives of children in the Tri-Cities area since 1985. We are a member agency of the oldest and largest youth mentoring organization in the United States, consisting of more than 350 agencies nationwide. Our agency currently serves the following counties: Sullivan, Carter, Hawkins, Washington, Kingsport, Johnson City and Washington, VA.

Our vision is that all children achieve success in life.

Our mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.

Our Mentoring Structure is built around a long-term, trusting friendship with a caring adult who models and teaches skills, behaviors and perspectives. Changes in the child’s behavior, attitude and school performance emanate from the bond built between mentor and child. High-quality mentoring relationships of one year or more have the potential to produce enduring developmental outcomes for disadvantaged youth through two core Big Brothers Big Sisters programs.

Our Programs

Community-Based Mentoring
In the Community-Based Mentoring program, mentors and children share general community activities at least 2 times monthly, 2 hours per outing. They engage in recreational, educational and service activities in a variety of settings on a flexible basis for a year or more.

Site-Based Mentoring
The Site-Based Mentoring program takes place primarily in elementary schools and afterschool care facilities. Throughout the school year, children and mentors spend at least one hour each week sharing lunch, reading, doing homework, playing games or simply sharing what’s going on in the child’s life.

How To Get Involved

Volunteer

We believe that all children should have the opportunity to succeed in life and live up to their full potential. Some kids need someone to help them along that path. Spend a few hours 2-4 times a month, for at least a required year, as a mentor to a child and you can make a BIG impact in that child’s life. It’s rewarding and fun!

Enroll A Child

Could your little one use a Big Brother or Big Sister? For more than 30 years, we’ve been able to recruit, screen, match and support mentoring relationships that have changed the lives of thousands of young people — one child at a time. It all starts with the right role models. And Big Brothers Big Sisters is the place to start a relationship with one.

Donate

Join our cause and directly support children in the Tri-Cities area. No matter how Little or Big the amount, donating can start making a difference in the lives of young people around you. By donating to our agency, you are helping us recruit new volunteers, cover the cost of background checks, provide ongoing supervision and support for our matches, and to provide cultural and social activities to enrich our Littles.

Upcoming Events

Vulcan Quarry Run

On October 7th, join us for the first annual Vulcan Quarry Run benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Tri-Cities. Do you think you have what it takes to run down massive declines into the earth and straight back up to the top? If you think you can challenge yourself to complete this feat, this is the race for you. This unique look inside an outstanding landscape usually unseen by the general public will leave a lasting memory in addition to the aching of your muscles and bones. Unlike other races, the Quarry Run allows private access into exclusive landscapes that will amaze every runner.

This 3.5 Challenger Run is the perfect way for you to make an impact on our community– it only takes a little bit of effort (and sweat) to raise the money that is vital to our program’s success!

Registration: 7:00 am, Lowe’s Parking Lot (2324 W. Stone Dr)
Start time: 8:00 am
Cost:
$25 Pre-Registration by Sept. 15; $30 Late Registration (t-shirts guaranteed for pre-registrants; late registrants while supplies last)
